In celebration of National Lineworker Appreciation Day, Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) is proud to announce a $40,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation to support the College’s Electrical Lineworker Technician program. This generous contribution represents an increase from previous years and reaffirms Duke Energy’s continued investment in workforce development and technical education across South Carolina.
The funding will be used to provide incoming students with critical tools and safety equipment needed to begin training in the high-demand field of electrical linework. Based on the Conway Campus, HGTC’s lineworker program prepares students for immediate entry into the utility industry with hands-on training in a state-of-the-art lineman yard.
“We are extremely grateful for Duke Energy’s ongoing commitment to our students and community,” said Dr. Marilyn “Murph” Fore, HGTC President. “Their partnership continues to empower future lineworkers with the resources they need to succeed while strengthening the infrastructure that supports our daily lives.”
Shannon Detzler, President & CEO of the HGTC Foundation, emphasized the impact of this investment, “Duke Energy’s support helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world workforce needs. By funding tools and protective gear, they are removing barriers and opening doors for students pursuing essential careers.”
The Electrical Lineworker Technician program, which launched in 2015, boasts a remarkable 98% job placement rate. With six cohorts of 16 students offered annually, the one-semester certificate equips participants with the knowledge, physical training, and technical skills required to enter the utility workforce confidently and competently.
“The energy landscape is rapidly evolving, and the need for skilled lineworkers has never been greater,” said Mindy Taylor, Director of Government and Community Relations for Duke Energy. “Our partnership with HGTC ensures that the next generation of lineworkers is well-prepared to support and grow our energy grid across the state.”
