Nursing & Health Sciences Institute Dedication

Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) celebrated the dedication of its new Nursing & Health Sciences Institute on Tuesday, July 29th with a ceremony marking the official opening of the $15 million facility on the Grand Strand Campus. The cutting-edge expansion represents a major investment in healthcare education and workforce development for the region.

Located at 770 Swallow Avenue in Myrtle Beach, the 20,000-square-foot addition reimagines HGTC’s historic Building 100—originally built in 1960 as part of the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base—into a modern training and simulation center. The facility supports all 18 healthcare programs offered at HGTC, with an emphasis on nursing and emergency medical services (EMS). It is designed to foster collaborative, cross-disciplinary training experiences that reflect real-world healthcare environments for both students and industry partners.

The dedication welcomed members of the HGTC Area Commission, faculty and staff, the South Carolina Legislative Delegation, and South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette, who also attended the groundbreaking ceremony in 2024.

“This new Nursing & Health Sciences Institute is a milestone for HGTC and the communities we serve,” said Dr. Marilyn “Murph” Fore, HGTC President. “It enables us to expand enrollment, introduce new programming, and deliver the innovative, hands-on training needed to prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals. We are deeply grateful to all who helped make this vision a reality.”

The expansion will allow HGTC to grow its nursing program enrollment to 600 students by 2030, while also offering professional development and clinical opportunities for regional healthcare employers.

Key supporters of the project include Conway Medical Center, McLeod Health, the Chapin Foundation, Bank of America, Truist Foundation, the Draughn family, and the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base Redevelopment Authority.
